Frequently Asked Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Do you offer group classes?

We do not offer group classes. Individual instruction means that you benefit from a full hour of one-on-one interaction with a coach rather than waiting your turn or rotating through circuit stations in a class setting. This means you are able to get a lot more out of the sessions and can expect to advance in your skills much more quickly. We are able to focus on getting you the most out of each visit while minimizing the risk of injury. Sparring is available for intermediate and advanced skills levels.

What do I need to bring with me?

Be sure to wear comfortable athletic clothing and shoes that you can move and sweat in. If you have your own gloves and hand wraps bring them along but we have these as well as boxing shoes available to borrow if you need them. I recommend bringing a towel and a bottle of water (we have bottles of water available if you forget).

What should I eat prior to training?

I don't recommend training on an empty stomach. You'll ideally want to have eaten a balanced meal containing some carbs within a couple of hours before your session. This is important to give you the energy to sustain an hour-long high-impact workout. Try to avoid eating immediately before your workout so your body has time to finish digesting. Also, be sure to hydrate adequately! You will sweat a lot so it's important to be well hydrated both before and after your workout.

Will boxing help me lose weight?

If weight loss is a goal for you, boxing is one of the most effective full-body workouts you can do. It's typical to burn as many as 750 calories during a 60-minute boxing workout. This can make it much easier to achieve the caloric deficit required in order to reduce body fat. I've seen many dramatic transformations and results are usually becoming evident as soon as a few weeks into training.

We incorporate strength training into the workouts as well, so as long as you are eating adequately to support muscle growth you can expect a chiseled fighter physique in no time.

What should I expect the first time?

I recommend arriving 10-15 minutes early for your sessions, if time permits. This will give you time to get ready, stretch, and warm up so you aren't wasting your session time. All training sessions are 60 minutes long. For your very first session, we'll have a quick chat about your goals and training preferences. Then we'll move through a complete workout that will include bag work, some time in the ring, and weights.

Where do I park?

There are spaces available and reserved for the gym in the back of the building.

What is the cancellation policy? What happens if I'm running late?

Sessions are held for you and booked for a specific time so please be respectful and let me know as soon as possible if you won't be able to make it at the time we agreed on. Cancellations are accepted via call, text, or email prior to 24 hours before the scheduled start time with no penalty. Cancellations within 24 hours of the scheduled start time are not refundable and will count against your pre-paid package. I will always do my best to be accommodating if you are running a bit late, but please keep in mind that often another client is booked for the hour following yours so it is not always possible to shift the time.

I have <insert prior injury here>, can I still safely train?

I'm not a doctor and I would always recommend checking with your doctor if you are concerned. That said, please let me know about any old or current injuries. I've worked through injuries with many clients and the benefit of individual training is that we can easily adjust and accommodate for any issues that you have. Safety is a priority and we can always dial back or provide an alternative or modification.

How often should I train?

At least twice per week is recommended, regardless of your goals. You'll be learning and implementing new skills with each training session so it's important to work regularly to maintain your progress.

Depending on your goals, it may be beneficial to add more training sessions or complement them with other types of training.

Do you train kids?

Yes! Kids love boxing and it's a great activity for their high energy levels. I have clients as young as 8 years old. It's a great way to develop discipline and self-confidence.

Am I too old or out of shape to take up boxing?

Never! Many of the clients I've trained had never stepped foot in a boxing ring until their 50s or 60s and some have never regularly exercised before. Boxing is an ideal workout for seniors due to its progressive approach. I will find your pace and ability level and we will work from there. As we age, working on skills like coordination, balance & core stability, and reaction time becomes increasingly important. Boxing is a great way to hone and maintain these abilities. Breaks are available when you need them. This isn't a boot camp where you will be screamed at to keep going if you aren't up for it.

Is sparring available / Do I have to spar?

You NEVER have to spar or get hit if you don't want to. If you are interested in sparring after you have reached an adequate skill level to do so safely, we have a great group of clients who participate in sparring and will aim to match you up with someone at your level as scheduling permits. It's a fun and friendly community with no egos so you can feel welcome and safe to give it a shot.
